Some of the other guidelines to follow include:

  • Do not shave the surgical site, this will be done in hospital for you
  • Have a shower either on the day of surgery, or the evening before
  • You will be given instructions on the length of fasting. This will depend on the time your surgery is scheduled
  • In general, 6 hours fasting is required for any procedure.  Operations scheduled in the morning will require patient to be fasting from midnight.  Operations scheduled in the afternoon will require patients  to be fasted after 7am with a light breakfast.  Please check with your surgeon before the operation
  • Fasting includes coffee, juice, milk, tea and chewing gum. Taking a small sip of water for your medications is okay. Your surgery may be cancelled for your safety if these instructions are not followed
  • Do not drink alcoholic drinks for at least 24 hours prior to your surgery
  • Do not smoke for 4 weeks prior to surgery. This is important as smoking will double the risk of complications
  • Some medications may need to be modified or stopped prior to surgery. Examples are anticoagulants including warfarin, clopidrogel, apixaban, dabigatran, rivaroxaban and some herbal or health supplements (fish oil, ginseng, turmeric, ginkgo and garlic pills). The new diabetic medications, eg Gliflozins/SGLT2 inhibitors,(Forxiga, Glyxambi, Invokana, Jardiamet, Jardiance, Qtern, Stegatro, Sergulromet, Steglujan, Xigduo) may need to be stopped 2-3 days prior to the operation. Your surgeon will discuss this with you
  • Leave your valuables at home
  • Bring your toiletries and comfortable loose fitting clothes for when you are discharged from hospital
  • Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after being discharged from hospital
  • If there is any change to your condition prior to surgery please contact your surgeon as surgery may need to be deferred.
