Abdominal hernias are classified according to their location.

Ventral hernias occur on the anterior (front) of the abdominal wall. The common ventral hernias we see include umbilical, paraumbilical, epigastric and incisional hernia

Groin hernias are located in the lower part of the abdomen in the region where the thigh meet the hip. These hernia can be either an inguinal or a femoral hernia

Hernias are more common in men, about 8 times more common than a woman. The estimated lifetime risk of a man developing hernia is ~25%, compared to a woman where it is less than 5%
